Fiber Optic Community on Facebook

January 13, 2010

Hello everyone out there in the fiber optic world. I wanted to have everyone stop by our “Fiber Optic Community” on Facebook. We started this community a month ago with roughly around 5 members, now we are up to 120 members and we want to grow. Keep in mind there is no financial gain in us having the Fiber Optic Community.

This is a great way to meet other fiber optic installers, manufacturers and experts in the Fiber Optic Industry. Please take a look and feel free to join.

Fitel Launches S184PM-SLDF Fusion Splicer.

December 30, 2009

(Taken from Furukawa Electric Website www.furukawa.com.jp December 30th 2009)

Furukawa Electric (FEC) has started the sales of its latest FITEL brand splicer, “S184PM-SLDF Fusion Splicer”.

By using three-phase wide area plasma technology, it made it possible to splice large cladding fibers of more than 1mm in diameter, which could not be achieved by using the conventional fusion splicers.

S184PM-SLDF will be a perfect high-end Fusion Splicer, not just for the Large Diameter Fiber (LDF) fusion splicing for fiber laser and fiber sensor, but also for all kinds of advanced fiber splicing requirements, such as the splicing of regular telecommunication 125µm clad fiber and PM fiber, or high strength splicing.

Background of the Development

Due to the increase in the demands for high power lasers, the needs for the LDF splicing has also been on the rise. However, the conventional fusion splicers for telecommunication application had been unable to accommodate those LDF fiber splicing.

This is where FEC, who also developed S183PMII Fusion Splicer that can splice up to 500µm-clad fiber in November 2008, has come up with this three-phase wide area plasma technology by using 3 electrodes instead of conventional 2 electrodes. This groundbreaking technology enabled the fusion splicing of LDF up to 1,200µm in cladding diameter. S184PM-SLDF is also capable of the splicing of bundled fibers and glass rods, which had been very difficult to accomplish in the past.

S184PM-SLDF is expected to play a major role in the growing non-telecommunication fields such as high power laser, fiber sensor and medical industry.

Features/ Data Specification

  1. Perfect tool for all kinds of advanced OEM, R&D and other specialized applications -
Since S184PM-SLDF carries over the most of the basic functions of FITEL S183PMII Fusion Splicer, it can meet not only LDF requirement, but also can handle regular 125µm telecommunication splicing, PM fiber splicing and high strength splicing application.
  2. Advanced “Smart Fuse” functionality -
By using this sophisticated PC-based software platform, the users can manage all of their splicing “recipes”, perform “live” splicing and write scripts that automate optimization procedures and specialty splice applications.
  3. Applicable fibers – SM, MM,DSF, High, PMF, LDF
  4. Applicable Fiber cladding diameter – 80 to 1,200µm
  5. Dimensions/Weight – 350W x 197D x 154H(mm), 8.8(kg)

Fiber Optic Test Equipment – OTDRs

December 26, 2009

The optical time domain reflectometer is an optoelectronic instrument which is used to characterize an optical fiber. The purpose of the OTDR is to inject a series of optical pulses into the fiber that is tested. Furthermore, the OTDR extracts from the same fiber a light that is reflected back from points in the fiber where the index of refraction is changed.

The OTDR is usually used by cable contractors who test and certify their cable installations. The OTDR measures the estimated length of the fiber and its overall attenuation and it can also be used to locate certain faults.

Other information provided by the OTDR, except the loss-length test is: the single-ended testing of fibers, the measurement of the distance to the end of the fiber, the checking of the quality of each piece of the fiber link, the documentation regarding the characteristics of the fiber link and troubleshooting faulty fiber links. The OTDRs are useful tools, whether you Buy Used OTDR or new OTDR, the difference between them being OTDR Price.

OTDRs are generally used in the testing of very long cable runs, when one cannot dig up or remove a cable that is kilometers long. These devices are indispensable for the preventive maintenance of the telecommunication lines. Moreover, OTDRs can even detect the existence and location of wire taps, being excellent surveillance countermeasures. These are even useful in the failure analysis of high-speed  printed circuit boards and in industrial environments, where the OTDR can test the integrated circuit packages in order to measure liquid levels. Whether you Buy a used OTDR or a new OTDR, you can be sure that it is worth every penny since it is a very efficient tool.

Nowadays, there are a lot of models of OTDR available on the market. OTDRs are complex fiber optic testing devices and due to the fact that their features and capabilities vary widely, it can be quite a problem to decide which fiber optic testing tool is best for you. Besides the OTDR Price you also have to take into consideration the features of a certain OTDR. If you are having problems choosing an OTDR or  you are not sure of the exact specifications of an OTDR, Give us a call, we are more than happy to answer any question you have.

You will find that each OTDR has all the necessary information in order to help you make the right decision and buy the adequate OTDR which is right for what you do. Furthermore, our website will give you the OTDR specifications, interpretation and measurement methods.

U.S. Fiber Systems has a large selection of OTDRs from Noyes, Anritsu, EXFO and Wilcom  . Since we are a muli-channel distributor we can find the right fiber optic equipment for you at the best possible price.

Making The Fiber Optic Stimulus Work for Broadband Development

December 26, 2009

Over $ 7 Billion in The Broadband Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP) is up for grabs from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the USDA Rural Utilities Services (RUS) for organizations that meet all the requirements and the deadline.

Requirements include showing what social benefits will be achieved as related to promoting increased computer usage in low income households, economic development of unserved or underserved areas, increasing the availability of healthcare or any of the many other social benefits that the broadband stimulus package is intended to nurture.

Another important qualifier is speed. With a minimum 3 megabits per second (Mbps) down to the subscriber and approximately a 1 Mbps uplink from the subscriber, WiMAX becomes an attractive choice.

Don’t forget the deadline. With only 18 months to address network planning, Rights of Way issues, and the application process 18 months begins to seem a little rushed. With less network planning necessary, less rights of way issues to negotiate and an online application for the spectrum license from the Federal Communications Commission, WiMAX reduces time for each of these stages and you should have your license in about four weeks if applying for the lightly populated 3.65ghz spectrum.

There are even more advantages to WiMAX like faster speed of deployment, A WiMAX base station could be Installed and tested in less than a week.  Assuming a maximum range of five miles, this equals a coverage zone of almost 80 square miles from one base station in one day. No wired technology can be rolled out this fast. Also Wireless backhaul can eliminate negotiations with a less than enthusiastic incumbent service provider, also increasing speed of deployment. And lets not forget the faster return on investment you’ll see by avoiding conventional fiber roll-out using aerial or burial delivery methods.

There has not been any trend so opportune to the telecommunications market since the Telecommunications Act of 1934.

In conclusion the decreased logistic requirements of planning and development with WiMAX make it the preferred technology to meet the list of technical requirements for the loans and grants available under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
